Transformation of biotech crops through chloroplast modification offers major advantages over transformation through the cell nucleus, the more common method of transforming plants. Chloroplast transformation greatly increases the protein output of plants and it eliminates a major environmental issue of biotechnology - the potential for genes to escape to other crops via pollen.
Because of these advantages over nuclear transformation, numerous companies are interested in utilizing this technology. Chlorogen's technology is applicable in several markets beyond human therapeutics, including food and agriculture, biodefense and biopolymers. Of additional value is that significant developmental work on specific product concepts has already been completed by Chlorogen and its scientific founders.
To leverage the broad applicability of CTT™, Chlorogen is monetizing the technology in these non-core markets through outlicensing. Several research and commercial licensing deals have been completed and several more are in discussion.
